Mari Hesjedal is a playwright and an experienced stage and costume designer based in Norway. She works freelance for both established theatres and independent projects, and has been doing so since 2007.

I love the process of making theatre and love to be hands on, whether it is physical theatre and dance, documentary theatre, multimedia projects or anything else and inbetween. As a designer I work closely with the director and the rest of the team in order to integrate the concept and design within the story and actions on stage.

Hesjedal holds an MA in Scenography from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and a BA(hons) in Film and Video from the International Film School of Wales. She has also studied theatre theory, dramaturgy and creative writing.

She made her debut as a playwright at the Norwegian Drama Festival in 2015 with Culparegelen (The Fault Rule). She has since written 15 texts for the theatre, productions of which have been put on at the Bergen International Festival, the International Fosse Festival and Ibsen Scope, among others. Bilde av frukt som rotnar (Pictures of Rotting Fruit/Bild von faulendem Obst) and Frostskade (Frostbite/Frostschaden) were produced at German Theatres Statstheater Mains and Theater Konstanz respectively in 2019. Mot regn (Out of the rain) was first shown at the Bergen Drama Festival in 2022 and has also been translated into English.
